Economic Insecurity and Mental Health in the Middle-aged Men
Kim Jae-Won

Lee Tae-Jin
Abstract
Economic insecurity and resultant inconsistency in economic needs and economic resources are likely to have a negative effect on one's mental health. Middle-aged men in Korean society are generally responsible for supporting a living but are exposed to considerable economic instability. The study defined economic insecurity in three stages and analyzed the impact of those indicators for mental health of Korea's middle-aged men using the data from KoWEPS 3rd - 10th wave. The analysis shows that all variables other than income volatility B(income dispersion for whole period) have a statistically significant effect on the depression. In the analysis on suicidal thoughts, only income satisfaction had significant effects. Having identified the impact of the various indicators of economic instability, it can be recognized that other factors related to economic insecurity besides income may pose a risk to mental health. The results of this study estimated the health effects of economic insecurity, suggesting that the variability of income, not the income level, or subjective perception¡¤emotional responses about one¡¯s economic status may have a negative impact on mental health.
